Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding). During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, frank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important. Thank you all for your help in our support for Planned Parenthood. This promotion ends June 1, 2012; LiveJournal is not affiliated with Parent Parenthood. A really strange thing happened today. Our landlady's ex-husband invited us to his theatre troupe's performance they were doing for a group of Afghans that were traveling the US.
I went in, assuming it would be men. I don't hold Afghan men in the highest regard. It's a little hard, when I've been trained to despise them. I recognize this as a technique the military uses to help dehumanize people you may have to kill. And we're only supposed to hate the Taliban, but when many of our dealings with the local nationals was with the understanding that they could turn on us, it's a little hard to embrace the local populace. (And indeed, while I was there, we had several men--including a Lieutenant Colonel at the base next to ours murdered by their "counter parts")
And to my surprise, it was a group of 10 or so women. To my further surprise, they were all really well-to-do. They were teachers, lawyers, and judges. Through their translator, I told them of my surprise. I had been trained that all women in Afghanistan were oppressed.
They were quick to tell me how many women are working in the parliament, as judges, in the government, doctors, and teachers. They also thanked Greg and I profusely for our service in their country and that they felt bad for us to have to serve there.
They told us that sure, in the very rural areas (which, I guess makes sense that I had that impression, as that's where we operated) the women are still oppressed, but when the Taliban rule ended in 2000, so did the majority of oppression in their country. They told us that women are very active there now.
For some reason, they also considered me something of a minor celebrity and all wanted to take a picture with me. Greg and I had been reluctant to tell them we'd been in the Marines in Afghanistan because, hello. It's an awkward thing, "Hi! I was trained to go and kill in your country!" But they were very receptive and happy for our presence. There was absolutely no animosity on either of our parts.
So, I traded e-mails with them and took pictures with them and told them the next time I hoped to go to Afghanistan, it would be as a tourist, once the war is over.
So I learned a lot more about the people of Afghanistan, and spent more time with Afghans today than I did in 7 months in country. And I'm really, really grateful I had that opportunity.
